IS MY CHILD ELIGIBLE FOR
THIS KIND OF PROGRAM?
Our Competitive Program is really for those students who not only have a strong natural ability but must also have a passion for dance. The commitment goes well beyond that which is required for our Recreational Program.
Generally, a student will be recommended by their teacher from our Recreational Program. That student's parents will then be notified of this recommendation and then if it is something they are interested in, an audition is set up to see which program they would best fit into.
If a student is coming from out of town or from another Dance Studio who has previously been involved in a competitive program, an audition will be set up to determine the best placement.
REQUIREMENTS:
A back ground in dance is needed to be even eligible. Several years experience in both Ballet and Jazz are our basic requirements, additional styles are an asset.
Spiral Dance has many different programs, below is an outline of the different ages and levels of Competitive Programs. Our basic requirement for a student entering a Competitive Program is that they have to take Ballet (a non-competitive class), Jazz Technique, and Jazz Choreography. The Jazz class competes in a group Jazz dance. If students wish to add more classes to their program, they may sign up for Tap and Hip Hop and at the more advanced levels Lyrical Jazz, Modern, and Contemporary. For those interested in Stage, Spiral offers each year a choreography class on a sign-up basis. This opportunity is not a regular class. We commission a choreographer who will come out on Sundays and a series of rehearsals are set-up to learn the dance.

WHAT DO THEY COMPETE IN?
Ballet is the only category that our studio chooses not to compete. Most entries for the ballet categories are studio's that do only ballet. Our focus is to train our dancers to be all rounded performers. To put our dancers in the position of competing against students who train entirely in ballet up to 5 days a week would be a disservice to their growth and esteem. This in no way undermines the strong ballet training they receive here at Spiral. We have certified R.A.D. instructors who are still active performers and who bring years of teaching experience to our students.
COMPETITION CALENDAR:
Spiral Dance competes in 2-3 private competitions and one festival per Dance Season. We also participate in Dance Conventions. These are optional, but if you are able to participate they are very inspirational. I keep clients informed about upcoming conventions and put posters in the studio so contact information is available. Aside from competitions, the students can expect many other performing opportunities within the community, for example Special Fundraising Gala's, Youth Showcases, Hospital and Senior Performances, and Sporting Events.
COSTUMES: A $50.00 costume deposit is due payable to Spiral Dance by Sept. 15th. Costumes for each group number can range from $55.00 to $100.00. Invoices are sent home in January. The amount owing will include the cost minus your deposit plus any monies your child raised through fundraising events.
FUNDRAISING: Spiral Dance does a series of fund raising events to help parents off set costume costs.
