  • SPRING (April to June)

Fall Registration for you or your childÕs class or classes commits you to just this first 12-week session. You do not need to feel obligated for the full year! However, if you choose to continue for our Winter and Spring Session; all In-House students get first dibs re-registering for the class they are in. How? Spiral will send home a re-registration form with each student. You simply send back the form with a post-dated cheque for the Winter and Spring and hand into the desk staff. After the winter session we ask for a commitment for the rest of the year. Why? Please see our Year End show page.

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

    PRE-DANCE 3-5 YEARS

This extensive program offers our little ones a basic introduction to creative movement and age appropriate dance steps. An exploration of the fundamental elements of dance including concepts such a rhythm, time, energy, balance and off balance, size, focus etc. are an important part of the structured creative process. Structured improvisation based on the concept of the day reinforces and builds a strong cognitive understanding. Social skills including co-operation, appropriate behaviour, and leadership is an integrated component of the class. Building self-esteem and confidence in part of SpiralÕs philosophy, this is achieved through encouragement and positive re-enforcement. These classes are all about fun! Our staff does on going training to specifically deliver an inspiring program to our new young dancers.

CLASS LENGTH AND ATTIRE: All classes are 45 minutes in length once a week, a maximum of 10 students per class. See Pre-Dance 3 years, Pre-Dance 3-4yrs and Pre-Dance 4-5 years on our schedule below the for class times available.

    What do they wear?
Gymnastic slippers (pink or white) or ballet slippers, a body suit and tights (any colour), and we allow the little ones to wear a ballet skirt of their choice, please make sure it is above the knees. Feeling like a princess is a big dress-up concept for this age group. (See Dance Supplies for store locations)

    JAZZ:

This is a very up beat, high-energy class that uses pop music favourites from the 1970Õs to present. Sharp, direct, funky, and strong is the best way to describe this movement style. A vigorous warm-up with lots of isometrics, isolations, and stretching starts this class rolling. Fundamental dance technique improves alignment, co-ordination, and strength to accomplish the dance steps learned across the floor and in the combinations. Various turns and jumps are taught as a part of the jazz curriculum

PRE-JAZZ 5-6 YEARS: Is a stepping stone class designed to take our Pre-Dance students slowly into a more structured class while still incorporating elements of the Pre-Dance Program. This class introduces the basic structure of the regular Jazz program including elementary Jazz turns and jumps.

    ATTIRE AND CLASS LENGTH

PRE-JAZZ 5-6 YEARS, AND BEGINNER JAZZ 6 YEARS TO 12 YEARS:

Attire is jazz shoes or black gymnastic slippers, stretch lycra pants with a body suit or tank top. NO jeans, or baggy street clothes. Hair should be pulled back in ponytail. Classes are 1 hour in length once a week, maximum 12 students per class. See schedule below for class times.

ANY JAZZ LEVEL BEYOND BEGINNER AND OUR TEEN/ADULT CLASSES:

Same clothing and hair requirements as above. Black leather jazz shoes (split sole style) either lace up or bootie style. (See Dance Supplies for store location). Classes are 1 hour in length with the exception of the adult and advanced teen classes, which are 1.5 hours. Classes have maximum of 12 students per class with the exception of adult classes, which have a maximum of 18 students per class. See schedule below for class times.

    BALLET:

Our trained R.A.D. (Royal Academy of Dance) instructors offer an open style class of the traditional classical ballet curriculum. Classical music is used throughout the class. The barre work and center work builds strength and flexibility, poise and grace. Class length ranges from 1 hour to 1.5 hours depending on the level, with a maximum of 12 students per class. See schedule below for class times.

PRE-BALLET 5-6 YEARS: Is a stepping stone designed to take our Pre-Dance students slowly into a more structured technique class while still incorporating the creative components introduced from the Pre-Dance program. The class introduces the basic classical ballet steps and structure of our regular ballet program. Classes are 45 minutes in length once a week, with a maximum of 12 students per class. See schedule below for class times. BALLET ATTIRE:

All ballet students are required to wear their hair in a bun. Pink ballet tights, any colour body suit, and a ballet skirt is allowed please make sure it is above the knees. Pink leather ballet slippers are necessary. (See Dance Supplies for store locations).

    TAP, ALL LEVELS:

IÕve got rhythm! Tap requires the use of fine motor skills in the feet, plus co-ordination and rhythm. Understanding of music beats and how they break down from whole notes to half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes is an integral part of the learning process in tap. The fun challenge is getting your feet to relate to these musical dynamics while learning the steps. Before you know it your feet will be the musical accompaniment. Due to the extreme dexterity required to successfully do tap we do not start students until they are 8 years old.

    ATTIRE AND CLASS LENGTH:

The clothing and hair for tap is the same as in jazz. The foot wear is especially important. Please make sure that you purchase a good quality tap shoe. We recommend the oxford style tap shoe. It is important that good quality taps be put on; otherwise the sound quality is inferior and the students pound and scratch the floor trying to hear their taps. All classes are 1 hour in length with a maximum of 12 students per class. See schedule below for class times.

HIP HOP AGES 9 YEARS TO ADULT:

This style of dance has its roots based in street break dancing and it is all the rage in music videos today. This funky style of dance incorporates lots of footwork and change of directions, plus body isolations including locking and popping techniques. It is definitely all about personal style. The more bounce and sway, the better you can get the groove. It is fun, athletic, and a great cardio work out. Pop R & B and Hip Hop music is used in the class. Our teachers are very careful to screen their music for appropriate language. Due to the more mature dance steps involved we start students in hip hop no younger than 8 years old.

    ATTIRE AND CLASS LENGTH:

Clean running shoes are mandatory! Please if possible to have a pair of running shoes that are used only for your class. We have had a problem of excessive dirt, mud and stones coming off shoes that make not only a mess, but also make the floor slippery, and consequently dangerous wear. We prefer students in T-shirts and loose style pants ie. track pants or sweat pants. NO JEANS! Please be sure that there are not zippers or buttons on pants as this can prove to be uncomfortable when doing floor work. Classes are 1 hour in length with a maximum of 12. See schedule below for class times.
