Summer Camps

Every summer, Spiral Dance hosts summer dance camps for students of various ages and skill levels. This is a chance for dedicated students of dance to improve their skills as well as a fun, physical activity for anyone interested in learning dance.

2011 Mini Camps...

JULY

P.I.T. "Princess in Training": ages 3-4 yrs.
July 4-8 & 11-15 Mon. - Fri. 9:00-10:30

Description: Children will be provided with the experience to decorate and create their very own doll dancer, which is talked about in the brief story time each day. The message and concept of the book will be explored and elaborated on in the daily movement/dance segment of the class. 


Jazz Power Diva’s and Dudes: ages 5-7 yrs
July 11-15 Mon. - Fri. 10:45-12:15

Description: The class will explore the basics of dance: including introducing the concepts of timing, musicality, patterns and pathways. They will get to explore a wide range of body movements and isolations, spatial awareness and the team aspect of dance. T-shirts will be provided to each dancer to decorate and will wear in the Performance showing at weeks end.


ACRO: Beginner- Level II ages 6 yrs. & up
Aug 8-12 Mon.-Fri. 12:00-1:00

Description: Will learn and improve the following skills: summersaults, cartwheels, handstands, round off's, back bends, 2 point balance (frog stand, 3 point teddy bear stand) What to wear: Body suit, lycra shorts, no shoes.


ACRO: level III & up ages 8yrs. & up
Aug 8-12 Mon.-Fri. 1:00-2:00

Faculty: Karl McPherson
Must be able to do: cartwheels, round offs, front and back walk over's. Will work on one-handed cartwheels, handsprings, front walk over's and one-handed walk over's, aerials, etc. What to wear: Body suit, lycra shorts, no shoes.


YOGA FOR DANCERS ages 10 years and up.
August 29 and 30th 9:30-3:00 (30 minute lunch break)

*This will include all handouts and the use of Props.
*Bring your own yoga mat towel and blanket.

Description: understanding the importance of alignment and proper placement to protect the body from injury. With handouts for visual guidance Jacquie will share her knowledge of the natural kinesthetic range of motion of the body and how it relates to dance technique. Pulling from her vast Yoga and Dance background, this is a must workshop for all dancers.

Born to dance? Then continue your dance training in the summer while having fun and staying in shape. Join Dana for a 4 week Jazz Progressive that will encompass technique, conditioning and style. Gotta Dance? Then join Dana and Nathalie for Spirals 2011 Summer Dance Camp. Your child will have the opportunity to encompass many styles of dance in just one week!! From Lyrical-Ballet to Latin-Jazz and Hip Hop, this will be an inspiring week of dance that will enhance their performance ability and fulfill their passion to dance.

2 levels will be offered:
• Junior ages 7-11 yrs.
• Senior ages 12 yrs and up
• *in the Senior level there will be a Performance Preparation class where dancers will learn tips on how to develop their Performing Attitude.

2011 FACULTY

Nathalie Heath

Best known for her participation in CTV’s hit series “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” Season 3, where she was ranked top three female in Canada, Nathalie Heath has been dancing since she was 4 years old. Since graduating high school, she has worked primarily in film and TV both as a performer and creator. She can recently be seen in the TV series “Hellcats,” the film “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief” and Michael Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet” music Video. At the age of 16 Nathalie was cast as Hillary Duff’s dance double in Disney’s “The Lizzie McGuire Movie.”

Currently, Nathalie is a guest teacher alongside Mackenzie Green at Vancouver’s Harbour Dance Centre; She is also working on establishing her own dance workshop series entitled “Provoke Movement” with three of her co-stars from “So You Think You Can Dance Canada.” Provoke Movement hopes to inspire young Canadian dancers across the country pursue their dreams in dance.


Jacqui Querin Fownes

Jacqui Querin Fownes is both a certified, RAD registered ballet teacher, and a certified yoga teacher, with further accreditation in Anatomy and Therapeutic Yoga.

Her in-depth understanding of the work patterns inherent in a dancer's body is allied with her understanding of how to release tension, realign and re balance the body. Come to this workshop to learn how to take good care of your precious, dancing body.


Karl McPherson

Karl has been a professional gymnastic coach and program director for over 20 years. He provides private coaching to competitive body builders, fitness and dance specialist. His expertise is in teaching all levels of gymnastics/acrobatics from Pre-K to adult. His accomplishments in coaching and elite athletic development are many. We are so excited to have Karl share his expertise with our dancers.


Dana Madder

Dana has travelled the world as a dancer, teacher and Ambassador for Canada. She has a vast background in Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Street Jazz/Hip Hop and Musical Theatre. Some of her credits include, So You Think You Can Dance Canada Finalist Season 1 & 2, The Tina Turner "Journey" Musical, "Center Stage 2", Sony Screen Gems "Impulse", CMT Music Video with Sara Lynn, NBA Vancouver Grizzlies Dance Team, Gemini Awards, 2010 Olympic Bid Celebration. Recently Dana performed in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies as part of the Professional Ballet ensemble dancing with Sarah McLachlan. She lives to share her love for dance with others and hopes to inspire all people to live their dreams.


Christa Fosolan

Christa is proud to be apart of the Spiral Dance Co. faculty for over 10 years now. Working with children in the field of dance is her true passion. She specializes in the ages 3-5 yrs and has just recently received her early Childhood Education Diploma. Coupled with the numerous courses in the field of dance education she incorporates the importance of music and dance for brain development, and for enhancing conceptual and cognitive learning she includes guided creative movement improvisation. Christa's has a special gift with young dancers and is excited to share her knowledge with the Summer Camp attendees.
