Director/OwnerAs a youth, Loretta was a natural athlete (and spirit) who dreamed of dancing. She received her first movement training as a competitive gymnast. In her teens, she finally got the dance opportunity she had dreamed of: performing in an improvisational dance troupe in Montreal. This lasted some four years and would become the fundamental training for her career as a talented choreographer.
Soon after receiving her dance degree, with a minor in kinesiology, Loretta was contacted by a Vancouver-based choreographer with a new Modern dance production. Thus began a long independent modern dance career in Vancouver. Her performance and artistic home for four of those years was with a six-woman dance collective called “Rebound.” Now, some 30 years later, Loretta’s former students perform on the same stages that launched her own career - a very proud “Mama-bear” moment! Loretta’s second passion is teaching. After three decades in the classroom, she still loves sharing this beautiful art form.
While her own roots in modern/contemporary dance run deep, she also loves jazz, lyrical and stage in equal measure. A highlight of Loretta’s year is teaching creative movement to the 3-year-olds in her Pre-dance class. Loretta's awards on the competitive front are too numerous to mention. While it’s an added bonus to have those honors on one's resume, she still believes that “dance is a process… it’s not about winning. It's a performance art form to be shared.” As Director of Spiral Dance for the past 20 years, she has felt a great responsibility in shaping, molding and sharing with so many youth. "I feel constantly humbled with what I learn from my students. Their curious minds and open hearts continue to challenge me to be better."
